Help Create a Lasting Legacy in the Chugach

The Friends of Near Point invite you to support The Conservation Fund
in its efforts to transfer 149 acres near the base of Near Point to Chugach State Park.

The Conservation Fund is a national non-profit organization devoted to forging public and private partnerships to conserve important land and water resources, including recreation areas and community open space. In 2008, the Fund purchased a 149-acre parcel (see arrow) near the base of Near Point with the goal of transferring the land to Chugach State Park.  Although originally slated to be part of the park, the land had been held privately for many years, during which it was targeted for developments that would have been incompatible with both the park and the surrounding residential neighborhood.  As an advocacy group that successfully challenged one of these earlier development proposals, a large antenna farm, Friends of Near Point applauds the Conservation Fund's efforts to protect this vulnerable area and ensure its status as parkland to be enjoyed by the neighborhood, community and state for generations to come.

We would welcome your support!

The Conservation Fund is working to raise funds from both private and public sources to cover the $1.6 million cost of the Near Point Parcel. You can help in two important ways:

1. Send emails or letters to your legislators.

A top priority of the Alaska State Division of Parks and Outdoor Recreation is the acquisition of this land for Chugach State Park. Urge your legislators to support the purchase and transfer of the land to Chugach State Park. To contact your legislators, click here. From this page, you can easily send a message by clicking on the name of a legislator.

2. Donate to The Conservation Fund

Donations with the notation "Near Point Parcel" would be much appreciated, and may be sent directly to: The Conservation Fund, 2727 Hiland Road, Eagle River, AK 99577.  Alternatively, please visit the Conservation Fund and make an online donation to help preserve this land. In the Name Recognition block, enter "Near Point Project, AK." Any contribution, no matter how small, will help our effort to get this land transferred to Chugach State Park, for the benefit of all Anchorage residents and visitors to our city.
